Ofcom Says MAC-Related Rules Not Necessary Anymore

In a recent development on the GC22 regulations for broadband migration, communications watchdog Ofcom has decided to close the enforcement program. After enforcement of the regulations, the number of MAC-related complaints saw a steep decline from 825 to 147 in a period of less than a year. This decline has led Ofcom to take the decision of closure.

The official website of Ofcom suggests that the decline in the number of complaints as well as the data collected by enforcement mechanisms clearly point out that the level of compliance to the rules has increased considerably, and that consumers can now switch broadband providers without much hassle and wastage of time.

According to Ofcom, there are certain ISPs like Pipex that have been found in repeated non-compliance of the MAC code rules and have been reminded by Ofcom time and again to mend their ways. Pipex was issued a notice for violating the rules of GC22 in December 2008.

The report pointed out that after the notice was issued to Pipex, the number of complains against the provider declined substantially. This clearly shows that the notice had made Pipex take remedial actions, as a result of which Ofcom has decided to stop monitoring Pipex in this respect.

However, despite the closure of the scheme, customers need not worry, as Ofcom is determined to keep monitoring MAC-related issues closely.

Still no HD? This May Be Your Year!

Most consumers know the pattern. A new generation of gadgets is introduced and since it’s brand-new technology, it is able to demand a hefty price that some people are willing to pay. I remember a friend who wanted a digital camera so bad that he paid something like $1000 for one of the first-generation models that had a pretty poor megapixel count compared to the cameras you can get today for much less. He was one of those people who just had to have the latest and greatest and was willing to pay for it.

Others, like myself, tend to wait it out. As long it’s a new gadget that is going to be popular, numerous manufacturers are going to want a piece of the pie, and as more and more companies compete, innovations will follow. After a year or so prices start to come down and that new gadget you would have had to pay through the nose for becomes available for a fraction of the original price.

We are really starting to see this trend hit the HDTV market now. With retail giants like Wal-Mart now offering HDTV sets and advertising them aggressively, that HDTV you have been dreaming about may be soon be something your budget can bear. With the holiday season just around the corner, competition among retailers should start heating up and that’s great news for consumers looking to upgrade to HD.

Now is the time to start watching the prices and see how far the retailers are willing to go to move HDTV sets. Wal-Mart is starting to offer pretty impressive deals on HDTV sets already and their competitors are promising to follow suit. This holiday season may be the time we see some unheard of deals on HDTV sets and it looks like the massive buying power of Wal-Mart may allow them to the bar for the rest of the retailers.

Today consumers have more choice than ever for their HDTV programming and companies like DirecTV and DISH Network in addition to the cable companies are always offering promotional deals to get new customers on board. This site has some good information for people who may be considering DISH Network. There are numerous other places on the internet to get information on the options available in your area.

Vodafone to Offer Cloud Computing Soon

Vodafone will soon be offering special cloud computing services to its users. This was announced earlier this week by the world’s biggest telecom carrier.

Cloud computing is the latest concept that is getting rave reviews from users worldwide. This term refers to making available to users the traditionally used computer based tools in an online environment. Be it applications, storage space or resources, cloud computing will enable a user to get these online without actually having them on his own device.

The basic premise behind the service is that today, people have to increasingly use these tools on the move. Linking them to one device or one location drastically restricts the flexibility and mobility of the user.

Vodafone has plans to tie up with Decho Corporation, through a strategic partnership, in order to provide and maintain these services. It plans to launch a backup service called the Vodafone PC backup. As the name suggests, users will be able to store backups of their critical data - be it official material or personal - on a remote location.

The best part is that customers can access their data from anywhere even if they do not have their computer handy. Security and access restrictions by means of identity verification will be put in place to ensure privacy.

Vodafone’s users will be able to use any fixed or mobile internet connection either for their own PC or for any other system and from any location to view or work on their data. The company also proposes to have a business version of this service. This will have added provisions for centralised control and management of data. Multiple users can be allowed varying degrees of permission to access and handle data stored centrally and managed by the administrator.

Although Vodafone intends to start offering this service next year, there is still a long way to go as pricing and costs are yet to be defined.

Ways Slit Lamps & Other Top-Level Opthalmology Instruments Will Benefit Your Practice

Experience, training, and more are involved in this industry. The opthalmology equipment you select to work with is paramount too as this equipment will delimit the quality of your work. The required instruments can be purchased remanufactured, refurbished, used, or new. Following that, it’s important to consider each piece individually including surgical stools, tonometers, and treatment cabinets to be sure of finding the best choice for your practice.

Employed in many diagnoses, there are various designs of tonometer in production to fill the demands of each and every optometrist. To secure the greatest accuracy you need to select only the best quality brand tonometers and those which provide most effortless use, thus generating a substantial acceleration of the diagnostic process - which will be of help to patients and practice alike. There is no rational reason to select any tonometer other than the very best the market has to offer.

Take care that in spite of patients’ physical differences they can all attend appointments at your practice without discomfort, and do so without sacrificing your capacity to position your patients appropriately to carry out their exam. There’s plenty of opthalmology exam chairs on the market perfectly capable of supporting any patient, from the shortest to the tallest, and they can do so comfortably in whatever position you choose.

Wrangling with your optometry instruments and appurtenances is of course not how you ought to work. This makes a good set of treatment cabinets a blue-chip addition to your practice. Treatment cabinets that make the most convenient storage available usually feature a drawer for those hard-to-store items, secure locks, leveling glides to counter uneven floors and flexible shelves. Some cabinets may be just too big to fit comfortably within your office, so do bear that in mind.

Just three of the items of optometric equipment that can affect how well you do in your job are the treatment cabinet, the examination chair, and the tonometer. Consequently, start your equipment purchasing only once you’ve positively defined what you definitely need. Badly constructed tools will likely disrupt the workflow, whereas, inversely, the more painless to handle and the more ergonomic your tools, the more proficient your performance. Select the perfect range, and you’ll be awed at how much smoother this can make the work at your practice…

So, as you can see, the choices you make in terms of your instruments will have a significant influence on your performance in your job, and, let’s remember, on the long term evolution of the entire practice.

ISPs Oppose FCC’s Proposal of Enforcing Net Neutrality Laws

The FCC seems to be quite persistent in its plans for formalizing the laws on net neutrality, despite opposition from certain sections. The sole governing body of the American communications industry has put forth its plans for creating a legal framework for net neutrality rules in order to prevent abuse of discretionary powers of the ISPs that at present decide on issues like content and price of the service.

The plan, though workable in the objective sense, has met severe criticism from ISPs themselves, especially since it proposes to take away their decision-making powers.

According to Dylan F. Tweney of Wired, the rule will create problems for ISPs as well as the users, as ISPs will face economic constraints and may return to the broadband cap scheme by giving up their flat rate scheme. This will in turn limit net access for the consumers.

According to David L. Cohen, executive vice president of broadband for Comcast, the rules are not of any practical relevance to the industry, especially since the industry has witnessed a significant growth throughout the last decade despite ongoing debates on such matters. Cohen adds that the FCC proposal is more likely to give rise to a new set of problems, without solving the current ones. Though such reaction was expected, it is difficult to side with the ISPs on this issue, given the stronghold that they enjoy in the US market. Wind Power Facts

Here are some wind power fun facts:

Wind power is the transforming of wind energy into a useful form, such as electrical energy, using wind generators. Throughout history the wind has been used to power sailing ships or transformed into mechanical power for pumping water or grinding grain. The main use of wind power these days is the production of electrical energy. Huge wind turbine farms are typically attached to the local electric grid. Smaller turbines providing electric power to rural locations. Today, utility providers willingly buy back extra electrical energy generated by the lower capacity domestic wind generators. Wind energy as an energy source is the favorite among many environmentalists as a viable alternative to petroleum products, as it is everywhere, renewable, widely distributed, clean, and produces lower amounts of greenhouse gas emissions, even though the construction of wind generation farms is not always met with open arms due to their and possible effects on the environment. The inconsistency of wind doesn’t create challenges when using wind power to provide a small proportion of actual demand. When wind is to be used for a moderate fraction of demand, additional costs for adjustments due to inconsistency are believed to be modest. At the close of 2008, worldwide production by wind turbines was 120.8 gigawatts. In recent years, the United States has added more wind generated capacity to its transmission network than any other country. U.S. wind energy production increased by 45% to 16.8 gigawatts in 2007 and surpassing Germany’s production capacity in 2008. California has been one of the leaders of the new age wind power industry, and led the U.S. in wind energy production for quite some time. At the end of 2006, Texas became the leading wind power state and today continues to build its advantage. At the end of 2008, the state had 7,116 MW capacity installed. If Texas was a separate country, it would have ranked 6th in the world. The total quantity of economically extractable potential energy available from the wind is considerably more than present human energy use from all sources. An estimated 72 terawatts of wind power on the Earth potentially can be commercially viable. Only about 15 terawatts normal global power consumed from all sources in 2005. These figures are in spite of the

Now Live Chat Access to BT Broadband

Initially started for those with hearing disabilities, BT’s Live Chat feature is now open to all. The feature, which works exactly like a messenger, would enable BT subscribers to carry out a conversation with one of BT’s advisors to get information about products, to resolve account queries (such as broadband connection migration), and to purchase BT products.

Until now, customers had to use the telephone to gain access to BT’s support staff. The Live Chat option is available on BT’s inclusion website (www.BT.com/inclusion) and it will provide instant contact with an advisor.

Warren Buckley who serves as the director of Strategy and eServices at BT commented on the feature by saying that BT wants customers to be able to communicate with it easily. He added that Live Chat is an alternative way of interacting with BT, which guarantees consumers a real-time solution to their problems and queries.

Subscribers can avail of the service from Monday to Friday from 10 in the morning to 5 in the evening. Visit BT’s inclusion website and click on the ‘Chat to us Live’ banner and you will enter into a live conversation with an advisor.

Hearing Concern Link was one of the many impressed with this service and praised the convenience it offers to the disabled. The organization is now keen that other broadband providers should start similar services and has approached Ofcom with a request for the same.
